Ford's maintenance schedule for the 6.7L Power Stroke

These come from Ford's 2026 Super Duty owner's manual. Ford's online maintenance schedule shows the intervals for your exact truck.

ItemWhat Ford calls for
Engine oil and filterWhen the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor shows the oil change message, done within two weeks or 500 miles of it. If the monitor resets early or quits working, don't let it run longer than a year or 15,000 miles.
Oil type and amountFord's first choice is Motorcraft SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil; any oil in the correct viscosity grade that meets Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 specification also works. The engine holds 15 quarts with the filter. Full synthetic SAE 5W-40 is Ford's alternative for severe duty and for fuel above B5 biodiesel.
Fuel filtersThe engine-mounted and frame-mounted filters are replaced as a pair every 30,000 miles, or every 15,000 miles on the severe service schedule. A low fuel pressure message also means they are due.
Water separatorDrain it with the engine off whenever the warning light or message comes on. That happens once roughly 6.8 fluid ounces of water collects in the fuel conditioner module on the frame.
Diesel Exhaust FluidTop off the DEF tank at every oil change interval with fluid certified by the American Petroleum Institute. DEF use runs about 2 to 6 percent of the diesel you burn, and climbs with payload, towing, altitude, humidity and heat or cold.
Diesel particulate filterRegeneration burns the soot off, but a little ash stays behind and builds up. Ford says the filter may need replacing with a new or remanufactured part at around 250,000 miles.

Why most Longview Super Duty trucks belong on the severe schedule

Ford counts towing or hauling a heavy load, dusty roads, extended idling, trips shorter than 5 to 10 miles, and temperatures well above or below average as severe driving. A Super Duty around here can tick most of those in one week: a fifth-wheel up SR 504 toward Mount St. Helens, gravel roads into the hills, a crew truck idling on a Kelso job site, then a string of short hops across Longview.

If that sounds like your truck, follow the severe column. That means both fuel filters every 15,000 miles and more attention to the engine air filter. Ford says dusty driving calls for checking and replacing it more often, and the diesel's air filter restriction gauge, which Ford asks you to check monthly, shows when it is loading up.

Exhaust filter messages and short trips

The diesel particulate filter traps soot and cleans itself three ways: passively during normal driving, actively when the truck raises exhaust temperature, and manually when you start a cleaning from the instrument cluster while parked. Short trips are the enemy. Ford says drives under 15 minutes, speeds under 25 mph or a lot of stationary running may keep the filter from cleaning.

When an Exhaust Filter Overloaded or Exhaust Filter at Limit message appears, Ford's instruction is to drive above 30 mph, when it's safe, until the message turns off. For trucks that live on short trips, Ford suggests a 20-minute-plus run now and then on a highway or main road, holding the engine between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. A round trip on I-5 to Castle Rock covers it.

Before a manual cleaning, set the parking brake outdoors, keep 10 to 15 feet of clearance from anything flammable or meltable, and carry at least 1/8 tank of fuel. Expect it to take about 30 minutes. In a dry August, keep the truck off dry grass and leaves during and right after any cleaning, because the exhaust stays very hot.

  • Exhaust Filter Over Limit Service Now, which means the truck can no longer clean the filter itself
  • The wrench light, which Ford uses to flag oxidation catalyst or particulate filter problems
  • A low fuel pressure message
  • A water in fuel warning that keeps coming back after you drain the separator
  • A DEF warning, a speed limit message or a check engine light

DEF, water in fuel and winter diesel

Use only DEF certified by the American Petroleum Institute, and never pour it into the diesel filler. If DEF ever goes into the diesel tank, Ford says not to start the engine; the tank has to be drained and cleaned first. Run DEF low or contaminated and the truck's speed gets capped at 50 mph. Let the tank go empty and, after the next stop, the engine will only idle until you add DEF; Ford says one gallon is the minimum to clear that, and the speed limit stays until the tank is full.

The fuel conditioner module on the frame pulls water out of the diesel. Drain it with the engine off when the truck asks. Ford's procedure lets about half a gallon run into a container, and that fuel should not go back in the tank.

Longview rarely gets cold enough to matter, but a January trip over Snoqualmie Pass or into Eastern Washington can. Ford recommends seasonally adjusted diesel below 19°F and an engine block heater below -9°F, and notes that DEF can freeze below 12°F, which is why the truck heats its DEF system. If fuel gels, use Motorcraft anti-gel or an equivalent, never an alcohol-based additive.

Ford allows ultra-low sulfur diesel blended up to B20 in this engine. Red-dyed agricultural or off-road fuel and home heating oil are on Ford's do-not-use list.

What gets checked at a Power Stroke oil change

Ford lists these at every oil change interval on a diesel Super Duty. Ask your service advisor for the multi-point inspection Ford recommends at the same visit.

Our technicians are factory trained and use genuine Ford parts. Once a repair falls outside the factory warranty, Clary Repair Protection puts a 2-year, unlimited-mile warranty on qualifying work; it doesn't apply to routine maintenance or factory warranty jobs. Service and parts financing spreads a bigger repair bill over time.

  • Engine oil and filter, then a reset of the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor
  • Tire rotation and tread depth (front wheels only on dual rear wheel trucks unless the rears show unusual wear)
  • Brake pads, rotors, linings, hoses and the parking brake
  • DEF refill and a water separator drain if needed
  • Coolant strength, level and hoses, plus the exhaust system and heat shields
  • Front axle, U-joints, steering linkage, ball joints and tie-rod ends, with grease fittings lubricated where equipped
  • Cabin and engine air filters

Your Power Stroke warranty

Ford's Diesel Engine Coverage on a 2026 Super Duty ends at 5 years or 100,000 miles, depending which you reach first. Besides the block, heads and internal parts, it lists glow plugs, injectors, the turbocharger, the high-pressure injection pump and a long run of engine sensors. The frame-mounted fuel conditioning module, fuel lines and fuel tank are left out of that extended coverage. Ford's base new-vehicle coverage runs 3 years or 36,000 miles, and powertrain coverage 5 years or 60,000 miles (Ford 2026 warranty guide).

To keep that coverage, Ford makes the owner responsible for maintenance as the manual describes and recommends keeping copies of every maintenance record and receipt. Ford also warns that biodiesel above B20, DEF that isn't certified and aftermarket exhaust changes can cause damage the warranty may not cover. Warranty repairs on a Ford go to a Ford dealership, and Bud Clary Ford is one. Planning to keep the truck longer? See Ford Protect extended service plans.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a 6.7L Power Stroke need an oil change?

When the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor shows the oil change message. Ford allows up to two weeks or 500 miles once that message appears. Should the monitor reset early or fail, Ford's ceiling is one year or 15,000 miles between changes.

What is the 6.7 Power Stroke fuel filter interval?

Both filters, engine-mounted and frame-mounted, get replaced together at 30,000 miles. On Ford's severe schedule (heavy towing, dust, lots of idling) that drops to 15,000. A low fuel pressure message means they are due sooner.

What oil does a 6.7L Power Stroke take?

Ford's pick is Motorcraft SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil, 15 quarts with the filter; other oils work if they meet Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 specification in the right grade. Full synthetic 5W-40 is Ford's alternative for severe duty and for biodiesel blends above B5.

My Super Duty says Exhaust Filter Overloaded. What should I do?

Drive above 30 mph, when it's safe, until the message goes away. If you can't, start a manual cleaning while parked outdoors and well away from anything that burns. An Exhaust Filter Over Limit Service Now message needs a service visit.

What happens if DEF gets in the diesel tank?

Don't start the engine. Ford warns that DEF in the fuel can damage the fuel pump and injectors, and the tank has to be completely drained and cleaned before it is refilled with clean diesel. Call our service department first.

Can I run biodiesel or off-road diesel in a Power Stroke?

Ford allows ultra-low sulfur diesel with up to 20 percent biodiesel (B20). Red-dyed agricultural or off-road fuel and home heating oil are not for this engine, and Ford recommends 5W-40 oil once a blend goes above B5.

Is there a shuttle while my truck is in service?

Yes. Service customers can ride our free courtesy shuttle home or to work and back while the truck is in the shop.
